Activated Sludge
The activated sludge process was developed in England in 1914. It was so named because it involved producing an activated mass of microorganisms capable of aerobically stabilizing the organic content of waste. Activated sludge is probably the most versatile of the biological treatment processes capable of producing an effluent with any desired BOD. The process has thus found wide application among domestic wastewater and industrial wastewater treatment.
Like the trickling filter, activated sludge is a biological contact process where bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and small organisms such as rotifers and nematode worms are commonly found. The bacteria are the most important group of microorganisms, for they are the ones responsible for the structural and functional activity of the activated sludge floc. All types of bacteria make up activated sludge. The nature of the organic substances will determine the predominant type of bacteria present in the wastewater, the mode of operation of the plant, and the environmental conditions present for the organisms in the process.
MBBR
An MBBR contains thousands of polyethylene biofilm carriers operating in mixed motion within an aerated wastewater treatment process. Every biofilm carrier adds productivity via the provision of an active surface area sustaining bacteria within protected cells. It is this high-density population of bacteria that achieves high-rate biodegradation productivity within the system.
Membrane Bioreactors
Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs) are water and wastewater treatment technology, combining a process microfiltration/ultrafiltration with a suspended growth bioreactor. All commercial MBR processes available today utilize the membrane as a filter, rejecting the solid materials developed by the biological process, thus resulting in a clarified and disinfected product effluent.
The three main configurations of MBR used for water and wastewater treatment today are hollow fiber, flat sheet, and multi-tube.
MBRs are increasingly becoming the technology of choice for water and wastewater applications.
MBRs are now implemented in more than 200 countries, and global market growth rates of between 11.5% and 13% are regularly reported in market analysis reports.
Confidence in the process appears to be increasing as the number and size of reference installation
Anaerobic Digesters
Anaerobic digestion is preferred to reduce the high organic loading of primary sludge because of the rapid growth of the biomass that would ensue if the sludge were treated aerobically. Anaerobic decomposition creates considerably less biomass than the aerobic process. Anaerobic digestion converts as much of the sludge as possible to end products, such as liquid and gases, while producing as little residual biomass as possible.
SCADA
SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) is a type of industrial control system. Industrial control systems are computer-controlled systems that monitor and control industrial processes that exist in the physical world. SCADA systems historically distinguish themselves from other ICS systems by being large scale processes that can include multiple sites and large distances.
HMI is usually linked to the SCADA system's databases and software programs to provide trending, diagnostic data, and management information such as scheduled maintenance procedures, logistic information, detailed schematics for a particular sensor or machine, and expert-system troubleshooting guides
